Looking for an interesting way of getting some exercise? Street Orienteering offers the opportunity to take part in regular street and/or park runs in a social environment. The sport caters for all ages and fitness levels - typically, A, B, C and D grade offer runs of 10, 8, 6 and 4.5 km respectively and an E grade event of about 3 km is especially designed for children and beginners. In addition, there is a Power-Walking section - if you can walk for about 1 hour this is the event for you.

Metropolitan park/street events are held at 7:00pm on Mondays and Wednesdays (if you are a newcomer, please be there by 6:40 so we can brief you). Suburban and bush events are held on Saturdays and Sundays from March to late October. If you would like more information please try the excellent training and information pages provided by the Emus Orienteering Club

Orienteering Social Evening

Local orienteers are providing a series of educational and entertaining evenings in the company of other street-orienteering and orienteering participants. We used to run these a few years back and they were well received. We thought it would be a good idea to restart the series and have planned two interesting speakers for this first evening. OK....one interesting speaker and me. Reserve the evening of Friday 10th February in your diary!

Get Fit for Orienteering – by Steve Bird

Steve Bird has been a researcher in Rehabilitation, Exercise and Sport Science for many years. He is also the author of the Amazon best-seller, “Get Fit for Orienteering”.

As an active member of Orienteering Victoria’s High-Performance Coaching Group and a member of the State Selection Panel, he is well known to local orienteers. He does, however, understand that many of us are not elite athletes and has published a number of papers in this area (see Heart rate responses of male orienteers aged 21-67 years) for just one example.

Steve’s presentation will show you how your performance could be improved by a structured training programme. Specific advice is offered on running, strength and flexibility training, and how problem areas can be avoided or minimised.

Winter Escapes – by Geoff Hudson

In recent years, Geoff Hudson has discovered that one doesn’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy cycling and running adventures in the Northern hemisphere. Although his anecdotes about cycling and camping trips past are entertaining, they are also quite informative.

Geoff’s descriptions of orienteering adventures in Hungary and Switzerland will whet your appetite for travel and will show you just how easy it is to take part in World Class events such as these.

Hahndorf Series - Free Training Runs

On those Saturdays when there is no afternoon run, we provide a fun walk/run followed by coffee.
Generally, held near a good coffee location, this series has become known as the "Hahndorf Series".
We usually get 25-30 attendees - it's a terrific way to socialise with other orienteers!

While there is NO charge for these events, we do expect participants to pitch in and help when the need arises. Course-setting is fun too - and we will provide you with the assistance you need to set your first course - click here to volunteer for an event)
