Mapping Guidelines

The map that participants take home is our prime marketing tool. If the map presents well and the participants are impressed they will come back. If the map doesn’t, they may not. We place a lot of emphasis on the accuracy of our maps, but presentation and legibility are just as important. We need to ‘brand’ our maps by showing that it’s a map used for Orienteering, by including the logo of the Club which produced the map, and by indicating how further information about Orienteering may be obtained.

Checklist for maps

To minimise confusion among our audience we need all maps to be consistent. As much as possible, please try to conform to the following standard on all maps:

Event information

Control circles and Numbers - should be computer-drawn for best legibility whenever possible. Be careful with circle/number placement - a poorly placed or sized control circle can obscure details near the control and a poorly placed number - such as 1 - could be mistaken for a road/route choice if it abuts a road.

Maps for events must also show:

Sponsors’ logos

We must acknowledge our sponsors who, quite reasonably, expect recognition for the money and assistance they provide to Orienteering. Our sponsors’ logos should appear on all maps.

The logos below can be cut and pasted onto your map

On all maps ESS Maps WSS Maps NSS Maps Where applicable

For OCAD users - the OCAD 7 versions provided can be imported and resized into any OCAD7 map. Depending on how your colour palette is configured you may have to change the order of colours. Space on many maps is limited so logos can be as small as necessary.)
