Results of a survey of Local Council Policies Regarding Toilet opening/closure

This survey generally covers only toilet blocks in parks. Be aware that toilets which are not free standing, e.g. part of a sports pavilion, may be in the care of a sporting club which will need to be contacted through the appropriate Council to arrange opening. Toilet blocks in shopping centre car parks are sometimes managed by the Local Council and sometimes by a body corporate, so it's best to begin toilet block arrangements early, not wait till the day before an event, expecting to make a quick phone call. The way to identify which Council you need to contact is generally by checking the thick yellow lines on Melways maps and looking for the City name on the map.

BANYULE: Most open till between 7.30 and 8.30pm. Council contact Paul Bruhn, 9490 4405.

BAYSIDE: Should be open 24 hours. Check for a sign on the door of individual blocks, as those with shorter hours should have a sign posted.

BOOROONDARA: Open dawn to dusk 7 days a week. Council contact Daniel 9278 4567. Be careful, as they have an open space co-ordinator who should be notified well in advance to be sure there is no other event on in the same park, but we don't want to find we are being charged a fee to book a park.

CASEY: Dawn to dusk 7 days a week.

DAREBIN: Dawn to dusk 7 days a week.

HOBSON'S BAY: Open 24 hours, 7 days a week. Council contact Steve Potter 9932 1049

KNOX: Open weekends only, dawn to dusk. Will help to organise outside these hours. Council contact Neil Starling 9298 8193 (diverts to mobile if not in office). Toilets in R D Egan-Lees Reserve managed by soccer club. Phone Neil for contact.

GREATER DANDENONG: Some open 8am - 6 pm. Some closed if managed by sporting clubs. Council contacts Damien, 9239 5317 or Allan Elliot 9239 5177 or Steve Luxmore 9239 5105 (Steve can arrange for borrowing a key).

MANNINGHAM: Toilets contracted to Civic Buildings Dept, 9846 0525. Most are open 24 hours unless there has been a problem with vandalism etc.

MARIBYRNONG: Didn't return phone call.

MAROONDAH: Parks and Works department. To be updated - info is on their website. Nick Veldhuizen, 9724 3385. Ring to arrange opening, as times vary from park to park.

MELBOURNE: Ring to organise opening. Council contact Peter Mulcahy 9658 8712

MONASH: Contact Wally Cavill on 9802 2508

MORELAND: Jacinta Bartlett 9240 1111. Trevor Withers is in charge of building maintenance which includes toilet blocks. Julia Dear 9240 2357 or Carolyn Monod need to know about any events being held 3-4 weeks in advance to be sure we don't conflict with another event. They need paperwork to be filled in before we can have the use of a toilet block.

MOONEE VALLEY: Generally 6am - 6pm, 7 days a week. For arranging later times, ring customer service department on 9243 8888

NILLUMBIK: Council contact Merv Baxter (didn't return call, so I haven't talked to him)

PORT PHILLIP: Parks and Gardens Department manage parks. Didn't manage to talk to anyone there. Foreshore toilets are open 24 hours, contact Melissa Francis 9209 6218.

STONNINGTON: If possible, avoid going directly through the council worker responsible, as she is not very helpful. Their contractor is Exell Corporation 9240 8330 and with any luck they will open and close for you if necessary.

WHITEHORSE: Dawn to dusk 7 days a week.

WYNDHAM: Most left open till 7.30 - 8pm, 7 days a week.

YARRA: Some closed at dusk, most open 24 hours.

YARRA RANGES: Most open 24 hours, a few closed at 8pm.
