Event 8 - Bellbird Dell

Our Hosts - 5th Vermont Guides

Thanks to Nina Cole and her well organised leaders and parent supporters for a great evening. The rain had stopped, the sun had come out and we were presented with perfect conditions for an evening run.

With most groups in the middle of end-of-year celebrations, we weren't expecting many scouts, but were pleasantly surprised when a few parents turned up with scouts that had mentioned the series and decided to come along for a look.

Once again this week, we were thrilled by the great support from younger participants - while Tina manned the main computer, the youngsters kept everybody in line and organised the transfer of tags from the finish back onto the boards. ABsolutely flawless - great job boys!

Bellbird Dell

The rain last week slowed things down a bit and we ended up field-checking the map on Saturday (and again on Sunday and a final bit on Monday). We were aware that the council had changed the location of a number of tracks - but were surprised to see that they had completed much more than this in the last 6-8 months. In addition, our notes from the previous event on this map noted that a number of very experienced orienteers thought that the tracks around the quarry were confused - either not as clear as they could be or just plain wrong.

So, during a break in the rain, we headed out to Bellbird Dell and scouted the area. We made note of obvious changes and identified areas that we needed to check more thoroughly.

The severe storms had caused some damage to the reserve, but not a lot - and all repairable. We were thrilled by the volume of water present - the creek was flowing, there were ponds all along the main path and the frogs were amazingly loud. We returned on Sunday to do a bit more, but the heavens opened and we headed to a nearby cafe for shelter and hot chocolate.

On Monday, there were council workers everywhere! Chain saws, mowers, whipper snippers - all this effort so you could have a great outing on Tuesday evening. Thanks Whitehorse!

A little history

I always like to know where things came from - how we arrived where we are now, so....

Prior to the first European settlers,  the landscape was thickly timbered bushland with Kooris of the Wurundjeri tribe hunting and camping in the creeks and gullies of the area we now know as Bellbird Dell.  The creek flowed from immediately north of the Dell, through it, and on to join the Dandenong Creek.

The first settlers, who were woodcutters and charcoal burners, came in the 1850s before land sales.  Selectors followed and they marked out, leased and improved allotments which would enable them to gain freehold titles from the Crown.  Temporary wattle and daub huts were erected and later substantial timber cottages.

Apart from some general farming, orchards dominated the landscape until the 1950s and 60s when the demand for new housing areas led to the subdivision of orchards.  Nunawading Council began the acquisition of property in 1966 with the purchase of a large block (7.26 hectares) from local orchardist Cecil Rhodes.  This block forms the bulk of Bellbird Dell North, extending from its Philip Street frontage to the then existing freeway reservation.  A further 14 titles were progressively acquired between 1972 and 1986 (Bellbird Dell South)  and the freeway section was leased to join together the North and South areas.  (As shown in map opposite)

In 1972 when,  after heavy rains, the increased run-off from the subdivisions caused flooding of Morack Road and the Burwood Highway, the creek was barrelled and the natural watercourse disappeared but the site and its adjoining land was reserved as public open space.

The first improvement works were in 1975 when a small section near Philip Street was cleared of blackberries and gorse, regrassed and play equipment erected. Further improvements such as the walking tracks, second playground, seats and picnic areas followed.  Extensive tree planting and landscaping occurred throughout the 1980s.

Permanent water features were constructed and boardwalks built along the central gully which follows the course of the original creek.  In times of normal rainfall this gully becomes a natural wetlands and planting has been done to establish habitat suitable for wildlife.

Training Corner - Handrails

A couple of people had trouble navigating from 18 to 19 - and we thought this might provide a good topic for this week's Training Corner.

Alternative 1 - Heading SE from 18, one could kick left onto the main track (ie the heavy line) and follow it around the bend until it hit the track junction. At the junction, turn left and follow the track around the corner and downhill - the track that heads North goes uphill, so it's easy to avoid going that way by mistake. You pass the man made object (a sign) and spot the boardwalk heading to the right. Walk along that until you see the stairs on your right and a path on the left. The checkpoint is just North of the small path.

Alternative 2 - uses a technique called handrails. Handrails are features that you can follow easily. Trails and roads are the most obvious, but you can follow fences, streams, ditches, the edges of fields, and other long, narrow features just as easily. Following a “handrail” is much easier than compass-work or fine navigation.

In this case, head down the track as before until you hit the track junction - the fence is just in front of you. Keeping the fence (handrail) to your immediate left, run along the track and around the corner, down the stairs - just follow the fence...it takes you right to the control!

Which way did people go?

Peter Dalwood is a very-fit, very experienced orienteer. It had seemed to me that the best approach to this evening's course was to tackle Bellbird Dell in two bites and Peter's track here indicates that he thought the same.

The controls in the reserve are in two groups and as you can see to the right, Peter takes the Northern controls on his way out and picks up the SOuthern controls on his way back through the Dell.

Total distance was 8.1 km, which Peter described as "challenging". Peter finished in 54 minutes with an average pace of 6:38/km.

Did anyone do the lot shorter than this?
