Event 12 - Yarran Dheran

It doesn't get much better than this...

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful feedback after this evening's event - Andras, a very experienced orienteer from Hungary and a regular street orienteer was thrilled. "This is real orienteering" he said "I even had to use my compass!"

So many new friends

Welcome to all of our newcomers! We try to make the series as friendly as possible - please introduce yourself to others that did the same course as you - it's a great way to meet other participants and a terrific way to get tips and hints from more experienced participants.

All in all, we had 17 people (plus children) come along for the first time in this series - a few old faces returning again, but most were newcomers coming along for the first time.  It was good to see Geoff and Lachlan return to the series - they were regulars during the last holiday period. Thanks to Karen for inviting Rene and Ryuusei along - they visited 8 checkpoints this evening...including the very challenging checkpoint #20 on the spur. A great result for such a young lad taking part in his first event - congratulations!

Training Corner

In semi-bush terrain like this, it helps to read contours - in some cases, it's essential. Our new website - currently under development, but already with some worthwhile pages has some good training material on map reading. For an early peek - check out http://street.orienteering.com.au/Sites/SAR02/page18.html#header1-3f.

Checkpoint 20 was attached to a tree on a spur; you can see what it looks like on the map to the left.

The picture on the right shows what the spur looks like when viewed from the North - ie you are North of the spur and looking South-West along the line of the spur.

You can see the raised ground ahead and the ground falls away on either side. The tiny white dot at the base of a tree - at the end of the spur - is the control. Several people approached the control by climbing up from the major path - this would have been quite challenging - roughly equivalent to climbing a 3 story building (ie each 5m contour is roughly one floor of a building).

While we map what we see - and this approach was certainly possible - we do ask you to be extra careful when going off-track. Slow-down and move through rough terrain with care. If there is any doubt at all, stick to the tracks - they are generally easier, safer and offer a low-risk approach to checkpoints.

Which way did people go?

We use a web-based system called RouteGadget to display the track of those people that use GPS units during our events. RouteGadget allows you to see where people went and also allows you to pit one against another (or others) in an animated replay of the event. This is a great training aid - route choice is incredibly important - both for speed but also for safety.

The results page on our new website provides information on how to read the results, how to load your GPS track into RouteGadget and also how to view and replay the tracks of others. Check out http://street.orienteering.com.au/Sites/SAR02/page21.html and scroll down to get to the RG instructions.

Thanks to those that sent in their GPS tracks for this evening's event - here's three of those received.

GPS Tracking applications on Smartphones

I was chatting to Ken Knight after the event this evening and he noted that while he didn't have a GPS watch, he was happy to carry his Smartphone during events - and could he use that? I noted that a few of us are using such devices and said I'd ask for guidance in this evening's report.

If you're using a running app on your smartphone - can you let us know which and what you think of it?

In the meantime, apps that I've seen/used include:

  • Strava Running and Cycling App (Personal comment - I *love* Strava)

  • Map My Run

  • RunKeeper and

  • Zombies, Run! (not really a tracking app, but it was a bit of fun).

If you search the App Store on your device for "GPS running", I'm sure that you'll get heaps of options. The tope three above are, to the best of my knowledge, the most popular apps on the market.

Ian Talbett's Thought for the Week

I don't understand why many people fail to see the good times in life. Why, even inertia has its moments.
