Event 18 - Surrey Dive

Our Hosts - 1st Mont Albert Scout Group

We're immensely grateful for the support that we get from various Scout Groups and leaders in the Eastern suburbs...and to none more so than Ian Talbett, the Scout Leader of 1st Mont Albert (and 9th Box Hill). Ian's family are famous in local scouting and Ian has followed in this tradition. A quick web search highlights his participation and support for more than 35 years - to Whitehorse Showtime, to Whitehorse Scouts (he was District Commissioner during my time as a scout leader), to local groups - it was difficult to find any aspect of scouting to which he had not provided a helping hand.

...and now, he helps us run our series by providing access to halls, putting out controls each week and staffing the registration table every Tuesday evening. Thanks Ian!

Should we build an Ark?

It rained and rained and rained....the weather radar suggested that it would continue until late into the evening. A few people got in touch and asked if we would still run the event and the answer is, and always will be, yes. Like all good scout programs, we have a dry weather program and a wet weather alternative. The wet weather alternative is that you bring a raincoat. While there are conditions that would persuade us to call off an event, rain is not one of them (the most obvious ones are extreme temperatures and nearby electrical storms).

Serendipitously, the rain stopped as people started to arrive and those that did take part had an enjoyable walk/run in cool conditions - perfect running weather apart from the slippery conditions.

Ros Demands that Premier Andrews puts the Level Crossings Back

There was a time when you crossed a railway track, you knew you were crossing one. As Ros discovered this evening, it is possible (courtesy of the Andrews Labour Government) to run over railway tracks without realising they're there....because so many are now underground. Now, generally this would not be a problem - but on tonight's map Ros saw the mapped railway line and assumed that it was the tram line she could see just ahead.

Quite logically then, she crossed the "tram track" and quickly realised that the roads there didn't seem to match what she could see on her map. It didn't take her long to work out what was wrong and - perhaps a little sheepishly - she crossed back again to visit controls 10 and 13. Her main mistake here was telling her partner Phil what had happened; he chortled rudely and immediately told all around him what she had done (never, ever get on a bus if one stops and Phil is driving - for years afterwards he will gleefully tease you about that time you caught a bus during an orienteering event).

Touch Free - what's all the fuss?

Air-punching or "contact-free punching" is a relatively recent innovation in modern orienteering. It does, however, require a special tag or stick - as pictured left.

Those that use it will never go back - it's definitely faster, but probably not more than 2-3 seconds per control. On a typical course, it probably makes 30-50 seconds difference; not a lot for you and me on a bush course, but very significant if you're an elite runner on a sprint orienteering course (where the winning times are 12-16 minutes).

Our original decision to use the Russian SFR System was based on the cost of tags - and we're thrilled to see that the developer now provides rechargeable controls and full support for Active Mode operation. In active mode, the control does not wait for you to press the red button - it detects the tag as you approach and updates your tag as soon as you get within 5 centimetres or so. Much faster - and very favourably received by everybody that took part this evening.

....and the cost? We now have more than 1000 tags - at a total cost of $500-600; and all of them are now contact-free tags. Certainly, a lot cheaper than $117,000.

On the downside, we do have to make our own tags - and in the early days, these were pretty cheap and nasty.

Eric Davidson has used one of our 1st Generation tags for 5 years now and came back to the finish to report that it had stopped working after 3 or 4 controls. Moments later, Bernie Shuttleworth turned up and passed in the electronic wafer from Eric's tag. Apparently the lamination had come apart and the chip and antenna fell out next to a control. Surprisingly, the electronic bit still worked perfectly!

Would you like to Help?

Pictured - Geoff draws up the maps for control pickup - 5 maps...4 controls per map.

Understandably, those of us with kids have to head home pretty soon after the event. If, however, you don't have such parental obligations, it would be great if you could help bring in controls after the event every now and then.

It doesn't take long - typically 15 minutes or so for 4-5 controls. Whenever possible, we try to send two people out - one drives and the other navigates and jumps out to collect the control. This is a great way of getting to know some of the other regulars!

Next Week

Is at Zerbes Reserve; several Scout Groups have already indicated that they will attend. Looking forward to another great event courtesy of 3rd Doncaster East Scout Group (the current record holder for the biggest streetO event ever).
