Event 7 - Blackburn Creeklands

Our Hosts - 2nd Blackburn Scout Group

Thanks to the folks at 2nd Blackburn for their hospitality this evening - under the circumstances, the cooked sausage at the end of the activity was a huge treat!

A lot stayed home - perhaps wisely so....but the Scout Motto is after all "Be Prepared" and in locations like Melbourne, being prepared for wet conditions should be pretty standard. During my tenure as a Scout Leader, I noticed that scouts learned most at the camps when conditions were poor - they seemed to recognise that they had to take steps to look after themselves and help those that were struggling. Once, as we packed up after a weekend of pouring rain, I apologised to the scouts for the weather. They told me in no uncertain terms that "It was the best camp ever!"

Some Amazing Results

The scores tell the story - the Juniors are Pros - regulars, several of whom run with Mum or Dad. Natasha runs with Dad (Scott) as does Adrian - but check out his score. Adrian is only 5-6 years old; his 53 points shows you what can be done if you navigate well.

A score of 30 plus for a cub or 40 plus for a scout is pretty good; once they get the hang of this activity, most scouts have little trouble reaching these targets. This evening, Blake McRedmond, Reilly Horner and Neale Lewis smashed through this target as did many of the cubs from Box Hill North and Deepdene.

Special mention to Caden and Liam who visited all 20 checkpoints - a feat that many of the adults were unable to match!

Don't worry about late penalties - the computer is pretty strict and deducts 3 points for every minute or part thereof that you are late. At this learning stage, a few minutes here or there are irrelevant - the key is that you competed safely, you knew where you were and you found a bunch of checkpoints. The key lesson here is to think about the problems you had - try to understand why they happened and think about how you might have avoided them. Then, if you ever find yourself in a similar situation, you'll have a better idea of what to do.

The Course

Our apologies if some of the checkpoints were too difficult for scouts to find - the area has many little nooks and crannies and we set a very challenging course to entertain the more experienced people that come along to our series. In future, we'll provide more straightforward locations near the start, so you can work out how to read the map before you head out to the harder controls.

Control #17 generated the most controversy - and we do confess to moving it West by about 5m. As we placed the control, we noticed that the resident had extended his vegetable garden to the North and we didn't think it fair to have an expected 200+ people traipse through it. So we moved the control 5-6m to the West - and attached it to the West side of a tree.

Our logic was:

  • The only path to the red dot was as shown by the dotted black path.
  • Anybody that went down the clearing and around the impenetrable bush, would see the control

Sadly, some chose to approach the control from the two seats mapped - pushing South through the undergrowth to the fence corner and then continuing down the fence line to where the control was originally to be placed.

Our apologies - next time, we'll move the control circle.

Some had a little trouble with Control #3 - on a gate.

I do agree that the vegetation shown is pretty gruesome and should probably be a darker green - but regardless of this, I'd approach this control as follows:

  • The most obvious feature is the fence line
  • If I couldn't find the control, I'd start from the road - just North of the track and head West.
  • As the map suggests, there is a break in the vegetation (where the resident has cut a path through from his back gate) - and voila - the control is yours!

Attack Points

We try not to place controls on blindingly obvious features - seriously, what would be the fun in that? In many cases, we find a blindingly obvious feature and then place (OK....hide) the control nearby.

The idea here is that you navigate to the obvious feature and then look on the map to see where the checkpoint is in relation to the feature. The control description is also useful at this stage. We call this obvious feature - an Attack Point. An attack point is a clear, obvious thing near the control that you can find confidently. In tonight's event, you might have used the following attack points:

  Control Possible Attack Points
2 - Tree Fence Corner East of the control
  14 - Tree Nearby road/track junction
18 - Tree Seat on the path, track junction, vegetation boundary
  16 - Tree Track junction
17 - Tree Seats on the path, fence corner

The strategy goes something like this:

  • Work out where you are
  • Work out where you want to go
  • Identify your attack point - the obvious feature near the checkpoint
  • Walk/run towards the attack point...keeping track of where you are along the way. In general, you'll see other obvious features along the way that guide you in to the attack point. Tick them off as you go.  We all do this when giving directions - we turn left at the garage, go right at the traffic lights, go through the gate and turn left - all of these are features that we use to navigate by.

Message to Scout Leaders

Thanks for bringing your pack/troop along this evening - we enjoy running the activity and we're thrilled to see some of the huge turnouts that we've had recently.

Learning to read maps and how to use maps to navigate from one point to another is a key part of the Scouting program. It's an essential life skill - one that will be used many, many times in the future lives of your cubs/scouts. It's worth reviewing the activity after the troop participates in an event:

  • Get those that did well to explain what they did and why they did so; this is partly as encouragement, but it also helps others understand the thought processes for successful participation
  • In areas where the scouts had problems, try to help them understand why and work with them to see if they can see alternative strategies that might have worked better

The lesson from our series is clear - few scouts get it 100% right in their first attempt; but after 2-3 goes, they start to get the hang of it, the activity becomes more satisfying and the scouts become more competitive.

Missing Troop Lists

Our apologies if some of the names displayed in the results are incorrect - we rely on getting the completed troop lists back to collect changes/corrections to the names recorded. If you inadvertently took a troop list home, please email the changes/corrections to us and we'll update the results.
