Event 16 - Tally Ho

Attack Points and more...

As much as possible, we try not to put controls on blindingly obvious features - seriously, where's the fun in that? Several of this evening's controls were on trees and a few people had a little difficulty finding them. As we select control sites, we try to be fair to participants - while we might use an indistinct feature like a tree, there will always be a logical way to find them. Let me give you some examples of the techniques used by experienced navigators:

  • The first and most used concept is the ATTACK POINT

    An attack point is an obvious feature near the control - something that you can find easily and then...as you orient your map, you'll spot the control quickly. Some examples from this evening's course might include

    • Control #16 - the bend in the fence or the edge of the thicker vegetation
    • Control #5 - a tree just North of the fence corner
    • Control #14 - a tap - just behind a man made object - use the shape of the building, then the man made object
    • Control #19 - a small tree on the edge of a copse - the end of the paved area is close by
    • Control 17 - use the bridge or the shape of the building adjacent to it
       
  • Run along a LINEAR FEATURE

    This is the easiest of all the basic techniques! We use these all the time - whenever we run along a road or track. But it's not just tracks and paths - there are lots of things in nature (and in suburbia) that form lines:

    • Fence lines - have a look at control #16
    • Vegetation boundaries - control #19
    • Rivers and creeks
    • Power lines
    • Lines of trees or rock
       
  • AIMING OFF

    When approaching a control on a linear feature - e.g. approaching controls 16 or 5 from the North, you can run into a problem. If you run straight towards the control and you drift to one side, you could run past the control without seeing it. In tonight's case, you'll reach the feature just past the control - ie the fences.....and then you have to make a decision - do you turn right or left?

    If you've got something to aim for, something you can see a long way away...no problem, run straight towards it. If not, try AIMING OFF - deliberately run to one side of the control and then - when you reach the stopping feature behind the control, you'll know which way to turn. Then, as you run along the linear feature (the fence), you'll spot the bend in the fence or the fence corner and the control is yours.

X means Man Made Object

As he ran around the building and down the stairs, Vic Sedunary checked the control description which said

              14. Tap {Behind X}

As luck would have it (well, bad luck anyway) - the folks in the church had rested a huge wooden cross against the smaller building just South of the church.

Rather than read the control description as Tap - behind Man Made Object, Vic quite reasonably assumed it was Tap - behind cross.

Vic spent some time rummaging in the refuse behind the cross - but to no avail. He was rescued moments later by Egor and Vanya who were being shadowed by their father Timofey.

Thanks for being so good natured about it Vic - I'm pleased you could see the funny side too!

Braeden's Progress

Braeden has taken part in several of our events now - as part of a personal development program within Scouts. When he first started, he was reasonably fast, but struggled to work out the best route and made mistakes along the way. Now...he's fitter, he's faster and he makes fewer mistakes. There's lots to discuss here - some interesting route choices, a few areas in which there was confusion - but all in all, a creditable run for a youngster just starting out. Well done Braeden!

 

Next Week

Those of you that have been to Ruffey Lake Park in Doncaster know just how nice a place this is - it has everything! Well served by shelters, playparks, toilet facilities, barbecues and surrounded by wonderful terrain, Ruffey Lake is one of the best running areas in Melbourne. Oh yes, it has some hills too - and some people don't like these as much as flatter terrain.

The body adapts based on what you do - that muscle pain you feel as you struggle up a hill is the very first stage of muscle development. If you run up a hill or two, your body responds to things by strengthening your leg muscles and increasing your aerobic capacity so you can do it more easily next time.

See - hills are good for you - and besides which, the ones at Ruffey Lake are tiny.

Back to School

Most youngsters will be returning to school within the next week or so. This also means that scouting starts again - so we expect the numbers of kids to start ramping up. For information - we record the groups that plan to join us on a given night in the Coming Events table on our Home Page.

The troops that have notified us of their intention to come along are shown in red below each entry. If your group plans to attend you MUST let us know by email and you MUST submit an attendance sheet. Please, please, please - try to do this at least 1-2 days before the event.

Pre-entry is critical:

  • It allows us to assign a specific tag to each child/leader/parent
  • The names can then come out on result slips and on displays
  • Our safety system requires us to know how many are still out and who they are - we can't do this if we don't have the names
  • and finally, it means I don't have to sit up later that evening and type in all the names before publishing results
