Event 13 - Blackburn South

Happy New Year!

We hope that everybody - and their families - had a safe and enjoyable break over Christmas and the New Year. We're now more than half way through our 2016-2017 series and we're absolutely thrilled that so many scout groups and families come along to take part. In spite of the lack of scout troops over the holiday period, our numbers are still running around 100 regulars - and we'd expect this to increase as folks return from holidays and settle back in for the new year.

We've got another 3 weeks where we have to amuse ourselves - and then the wonderful groups that put their hands up to organise events will take over. Make sure you join us - the next 3 maps are among the best available:

  • 10 Jan - Deakin University - 3D navigation at its best
  • 17 Jan - Ringwood Lake - a wonderful park area with some complex urban terrain nearby. Dinner afterwards at Daisy's Hotel.
  • 24 Jan - Ruffey Lake Park in Doncaster - superb park running - it doesn't get much better!

This Evening's Event

Eley Park provides a well-sheltered, pretty location from which to start an event. The Milpara Scout Hall there used to be used as a Buddhist Temple - but these folks have moved on. In spite of having the hall there, it was too nice an evening to go indoors - we set up in front of the hall and put the start/finish on its Southern side.

Great results in the Adult Run section - with course lengths ranging from 7.3 km (Phil Torode) up to 7.99 km (David Prentice) lots of people decided to try for the lot. Leading the pack was Matt Heritage, currently on leave from our Defence Forces - a career that seems to be keeping him pretty fit. Of particular interest was 2nd place - Simon Ryan - taking part for the first time. Once he gets the hang of reading our maps at speed, he'll certainly be a force to reckon with. Other results worthy of note were Megan Bushby and Rob Hudson - both sprinting into the finish with all controls and a minute or so to go - a great use of the available time!

Sadly, Dave Stillwell was missing in action this evening. Dave rode his bike from Hawthorn to Berwick last night to take part in an event there. Unfortunately, he took a tumble along the way - but still made it to the event and picked up a control before heading for the nearby railway station and home. We hope you recover quickly Dave! This left veteran orienteers Phil Torode and Tony Bird to take line honours - with Phil getting all controls in just 53 minutes!

Adam Scammell rides a skateboard at our events and managed to beat the other cyclist, Peter Maloney, by 6 minutes or so. Shortly after the finish, a wheel came off his skateboard...very lucky indeed that it was at low speed at the time.

Once again, welcome to all of the folks that joined us for the first time this evening - to Geoff Brooks and son Lachlan, to Shawn Mitchell who attended previously with scouts but came along with Mum (a highly experienced orienteer and rogainer) this evening, Katie Wu and family, Simon Ryan, Kim Edgar (who came along to see what son Braeden had been raving about over the past few weeks), Sakuda Yukata from Matsudo in Japan and Rob Lambert. In addition, we saw Damian, Elijah and Robert come along for the 2nd time - and promise to make up permanent eTags for them before next week.

Our Volunteers are getting Younger

It's really great to see young folks pitch in and help out - and this is the best yet! Thanks to Karen for providing such a wonderfully entertaining video.

Introducing Bill Borrie

I met Bill a couple of weeks ago at a streetO event in Ringwood and he decided to come along to check out our events. Bill was previously from Melbourne, but now works in the United States. I asked Bill to provide a brief intro....if you see him next week, please introduce yourself.
I'm a member of Eastern Washington Orienteering Club, from just east of Seattle, which I guess makes me an EWOC! I'm a professor at the University of Montana in Missoula, which is about an hour south of where Fred Veler used to live. EWOC is a very small club and only has events once a month on average, typically with only three different length courses.

EWOC has one particularly well known area (Fishtrap Lake) where we occasionally organize a Goat event - they are long courses (say, 16 km with 30 controls) with a mass start line event (like a Rogaine). In a Goat you are actively encouraged to follow other competitors and at Fishtrap you can see for long distances. But, there's a twist - you can skip a control. So, you never know for sure that the person in front of you is going to the same control as you are.

Like most US orienteers, we have to travel quite long distances to compete. While Seattle has a strong club (Cascade Orienteering Club, with several US champions and some great youth classes), it is an eight hour drive. So, most national ranking events ("A" events) are two day competitions with often a warm up day before hand.

Anyway, it's neat to be back in Australia for a month and to enjoy park and street orienteering throughout the summer. What a delight to be able to choose from five different events every week!

Braeden vs Rob

In addition to bringing Mum along this evening, Braeden conned his Uncle - Robert - to come along too. Rob thought he would tag along with Braeden to see what it was all about - but Braeden quickly saw an opportunity for some family rivalry. And so it began - Braeden armed with the latest (well almost) technology in wrist mounted GPS units and Uncle Rob carrying a crappy little bike GPS that was being sold cheaply because it didn;t work all that well.

No matter, you'll get the general idea - the end result of Round 1 was that both managed to get all controls - with Braeden beating Rob by 30 seconds or so. A great effort from Rob as he noted as he finished that "He hadn't run that far or fast in years!". Well done to both of you  BLUE is Rob, RED is Braeden
