Event 8 - Blackburn Lake

Our Hosts this Evening

1st/8th Blackburn Scout Group are just across the road from one of the prettiest parks in Melbourne - while Blackburn Lake is roughly triangular and only 500m on each side, it offers some wonderful running opportunities. The question for our course-setter was how to make best use of such an area.

We thought about line courses - but these limit the choices and would look pretty cluttered on a map such as this. Our use of electronic controls allows us to play with other formats - so we decided to use the multiplier format first used at Surrey Dive a couple of years ago. There were instructions printed on the master maps and all maps distributed to runners. In addition, we challenged people as they approached the start to make sure that they understood what was required.

We thought the instructions were pretty clear - but there was still a fair bit of discussion amongst starters and people seemed to study the map a lot more before pressing the START control. The instructions were...

INSTRUCTIONS - READ THIS FIRST

There are 20 controls in the park
This is a MULTIPLIER score event

The score from your 1st 5 controls will be multiplied by 5
your next 5 controls by 4
your next 5 controls by 3
and your last 5 controls by 2

To maximise score, do the 5's first, then the 4's,
then the 3's and finally the 2's.

Signify you understand this, by pressing the START control ( a cunning Get out of Jail Free card, planted by the course setter)

In spite of this, one or two unfortunates ran what seemed to be a pretty short course and returned to the start with slightly less than the maximum possible score. Regardless of this, all seemed to enjoy the run - and who wouldn't with cool conditions in such a great area.

Welcome to Newcomers and Returning Friends

As we field-checked the map on Sunday, we bumped into Gordon and two delightful young daughters. They were curious about what we were doing and we showed them the map we were checking. We were thrilled this evening when Gordon, Ellie and Cordelia turned up to take part. Those of you that take part will be well aware of our primary focus - to entertain local kids and families in Melbourne's parks and gardens - and along the way give them a basic understanding of maps and navigation concepts. Thanks for bringing the family along this evening Gordon - it's really appreciated!

One minor thing - in our briefing...we may have neglected to mention the severe late penalties applied when people take more than 60 minutes for their adventure. The computer is cruel - it doesn't care how hard you worked to get all those points - late is late - and it deducts penalties with glee (the Adventure Racing equivalent of the local Tax Office)

Next Week

Is in another parkland/semi-bush area in nearby Vermont - Bellbird Dell. The start location is : Vermont Secondary College, Morack Road, Vermont. While the college is set back from the park by 200m or so, the intervening streets are pretty quiet. Rest assured, you'll get another wonderful park-run next week.

Training Tips

Attack Points

As I ran around the lake this evening, it was clear that some folks were struggling to find controls and I provided assistance to half a dozen or so. Unlike street-orienteering, we try not to put controls on blindingly obvious features - it's just too easy to find light poles on corners, lone park-benches, fire hydrants etc. As much as possible, we try to place controls on less distinct features - which are usually pretty close to the aforementioned blindingly obvious thing.

Finding these controls then becomes a matter of navigating to the obvious feature - called an ATTACK POINT in orienteering - and then working out where the control is in relation to that feature. Most of our controls this evening were like this:

  • Control 9 is a tree - just North of the park bench
  • Control 10 is a tree in light green - just East of the path and North-East of the black feature (which was a rock wall)
  • Control 8 was on a tree - just next to a man-made object. More obvious, however, is the end of the fence - just run to the end of the fence, turn right and see the electricity box and the control is just to the left of the box. Easy!
  • Several people had trouble with #14 - if approaching from the West, go past the lookout, over the bridge and there's a minor track on the left. The control was actually quite visible from the main track.

What can I Cross?

The symbols and colours on the map tell you where you can go/are allowed to go. Everybody taking part should have a reasonable understanding of the symbols below:
