Event 2 - CAMELOT RISE

It's About Running with Friends

One of the great things about navigation sports is that most of the participants don't take it too seriously. While there is good-natured ribbing when someone makes a huge mistake (see below), most of those present know that they've made the same mistake - or are likely to do so at some time in the future.

The cool conditions this evening brought out a huge number of newcomers - with 45 (new) people registering through our iPad Registration system. Many of these were folks that came along last year but didn't make it last week - if you plan to join us next week, we need you to register (or re-register) as you run for the first time each year. We record this information for public liability insurance purposes - so please help us to protect you.

Greg Andrews Wins!

The competition among the runners is always high - and Harry is usually up there. Congratulations to our Public Relations guru Greg Andrews - beating Harry by 34 seconds to take out 1st Place.

There was a possibility of Rain

We checked out the rain radar before the event and decided that if it was to rain, it wouldn't be until late in the evening. Our expectation was that it might rain late in the event or shortly afterwards. What we hadn't expected was the intensity of the downpour that occurred. At around 8:05, the heavens opened....initially with a few heavy raindrops, but rapidly escalating into a torrential downpour that had us running for cover. The bulk of our gear is waterproof - we simply closed the lid on the computer system and it purred away quietly in it's watertight briefcase. We quickly threw lids on some of our tubs and boxes but then realised that we'd left car-doors open. Our new vehicle has tons of room and we tossed everything lying around into the back of the vehicle - it was kind of haphazard, but it seemed to fit.

To the North, there were two flashes in the night sky, followed soon after by loud bangs. We thought it was thunder, but it didn't really sound like it. We learned shortly afterwards that there had been two explosions in nearby electrical infrastructure and that emergency vehicles were in attendance - so much for all the money we've paid for gold-plating the electrical network.

The lesson learned here is clear - a significant amount of our infrastructure could have been packed and secured before the storm arrived. By 7:15, we can pack up most of registration, all of the tags and the start infrastructure. If we had done this tonight, we could just have closed the lid on the computer system and walked to cover.

Local Residents protest Removal of Street Tree

Thanks to Alicia for our most entertaining story this evening - it seems that as she approach control #5, she was bailed up by local residents who wanted to know what the marker attached to their tree was for. They were quite relieved when she explained what was going on - apparently, they had thought that the control was put there by the council to indicate that the tree was to be removed. They were sufficiently incensed by this that they contacted the council and asked why this was happening. The council pleaded ignorance but didn't offer alternative suggestions.

Strangely, these folks didn't read the printed label that is a feature on all of our controls - the text explaining what the control is, when it will be used and removed and who to contact if they have questions.

If you're ever caught in such a situation, please be polite and gently explain what's going on - as Alicia did this evening. Thanks Alicia!

Do we need a HoverBoard Category?

Adam Scammell is a true techie - a classic first-adopter. Those that know him are well aware of his interest in playing with new technologies - most recently a series of increasingly sophisticated drones.....and now, a motorised skateboard. Because this evening's event was in flat terrain, Bruce and Peter were well ahead of even the fastest runner. Interestingly, check out Adam's result on the skateboard - roughly the same pace as the winning runner. That's really moving - hope he wears protective clothing!

Volunteers Needed

While we're happy to offer starts any time between 6 and 7pm, we'd be grateful if some of you - ie those that are willing to help out by picking up a few controls - could start at the later end of the field. If you arrive a little later and start 6:50-7:00 pm, you should finish comfortably by 7:50, spend 5-10 minutes cooling down and having a drink and then spend 10 minutes or so picking up a few controls. If you can help us out like this, please let us know and we'll make sure things are organised by the time you finish.
