Event 1 - 2015 - gARDINER'S cREEK

Welcome Back!

It was great to see so many of our regulars turn up this evening - the younger kids were thrilled to see that their tags were still on the board while some of our older compatriots took a few moments to settle back in.

This was partly because we've extended our online coverage to cover the registration process for first-timers - which at this stage in the season...is almost everybody. Over the next few weeks, we'll smooth out a few rough edges - eventually having a system where everything appears on the net as it is entered.

Those of you that filled in the paper forms last year will probably be unaware that we had to type all that stuff into a spreadsheet last year. No longer - we now provide 4-5 tablets (iPads and Android units) that were all connected to our central system via a WiFi box in my car. It is of course, worth noting that Darian Panter spent only a few moments looking at the iPad application and rushed back to his car to get his phone - moments later, he returned with the application working perfectly on his mobile.

While this sounds like a hassle - you should only have to do it once. Next year, you can just swipe your tag or enter your name and the system will display data currently in place. You can then update it if required.

Our Newest Member

One thing this series is not short of is cute little kids - and thanks to Mike and Karen Clarke, there's another. Welcome aboard to Josie - now 3 months old and taking part in her first event this evening. We're making more children's tags this week - so Karen can compete as Josie from now on.

Check out the great family photo - Mike, Josie, Karen and Zoe (our champion Junior from 2013).

Taking things to a New Level

We're immensely grateful to those that pitch in to help each week and to others that offer suggestions/ideas for future improvements. Your opinion is always appreciated and while we may not have the time and resources to do everything we'd like, we do make notes and revisit such things when time permits.

We're particularly grateful to those that take a driving role in making change happen - and on this basis we'd like to award Suburban Adventure Racing's highest accolade (known as an 'Attaboy') to Katherine Dent. With minimal help from Luka, Katherine provided the expertise and support to provide us with a top-class fixture for this year's series -

Please take one or two of these glossy brochures; keep one on your fridge or in your glove-box and post the other on the noticeboard at work - or give it to a friend that you think might enjoy an enjoyable run in good company.

Deakin Remapping

Deakin Uni never stays still for long - but the current spate of building projects took us quite by surprise. We were aware of several of these and had mapped accordingly - but as we put controls out earlier in the day, we observed workmen putting a fence around one of our planned control sites (control #15). Fortunately, they were just setting up a storage area and were quite cooperative when I explained what we were doing. No doubt, they had heard of the many fence climbing exploits by members of the orienteering community and decided not to take a chance with their valuable fences.

We're remapping Deakin at the moment for an event in 5-6 weeks; if you'd like another run through the more complex areas available, this would be a good choice.

What did we do over Winter?

While some of us stayed in Melbourne for what surely must be one of the colder winters in recent times, several of our number headed overseas to warmer climates:

  • Bill and Sue - travelled through Germany, France, Spain and Portugal - putting many wonderful photos up on Facebook to make us all envious. They arrived back in Melbourne on Tuesday - sadly not in time to make it for our event.

  • Greg Andrews - went bike touring in Scandinavia - riding to the Northernmost tip of Europe and again posting some amazing pictures. After the ride, Greg and his partner competed in the World Rogaining Championships in Finland.

  • Ainslie and Peter - travelled extensively in Canada and then went bike riding in Cuba.

This Evening's Results

Harry continues to do well - but it's worth noting that he has the occasional navigational blowout. Our splits analysis suggests that Harry came 1st or 2nd on most legs - but dropped to 32 out of 36 while running from 9 to 15 and then 21st out of 29 while running from 3 to 14.

Hang in there guys - he can be beaten...check out his splits here

Bruce Cops a blowout on the way to the Event

Bruce Paterson rides to most events each week - a Herculean feat by anybody's standards (if an ETS is reintroduced, we're going to trade him for Carbon credits).

Sadly, as he wound his way through Gardiner's Creek, there was an explosion from his tyre - heard by several nearby runners who said it sounded like a gunshot (I'm not sure what a gunshot sounds like - but one of the reporting folks was American....he would know).

As a result, Bruce turned towards home and walked his bike back along the tracks....becoming a DNS for our first event.

The Map

Warning - Boring Stuff Below....

Our new registration screen - for those of you that haven't seen it - is shown below. We use this capability to record details of your registration, your insurance payment and to record the eTag allocated to you. The ultimate goal is to fully automate the entire process - or at the very least....to get participants to do the data entry for us. This makes sure that we record your details correctly and that we don't have problems trying to read your writing. Good for you, good for us!

It's pretty straightforward...just tap on each field and enter the appropriate details - the numeric keypad will appear where appropriate. When complete - press SUBMIT and all of the details entered will be forwarded to our central database.
