2009/10 Training Activities - Saturday Mornings

[ Home | Monday Nights | Tuesday Nights | Wednesday Nights | Thursday NSS | Geelong | Wyndham | Sunday | Training Runs | Past Events | Useful Links ]

Where:  Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne
When:  We provide entertainment and exercise on days when there are no other organised events scheduled.
Current Training Runs - 10:00 am Saturday mornings
Who:  We provide entertaining and amusing walking and running experiences for folks that want a little exercise in the company of friends. Loosely based on the popular pastime of street-orienteering - these are low-key events - with a focus on fun. In spite of this, the events are generally well organised and run to the standards normally offered on regular street-orienteering evenings.

We stress to all attending that this is a training event and you are responsible for assuring your own safety and that of others you encounter during the event.

Cost: While there is NO charge for these events, we do expect participants to pitch in and organise an event when they think they're ready. Lots of people have set their first orienteering course on one of our training nights. It's interesting and with good support from regulars, it's fun too!
More information: We would be pleased to provide you with assistance in getting started - people turning up to their first event are asked to arrive by 6:30 p.m. This will provide more than enough time to show you how to register for the event and explain how to take part in the event.  If you have any questions, please ring Geoff Hudson on (03) 9888 8121

Rules of Engagement

It's a new season - so perhaps it's worth restating some of the guidelines for our series:

  • Your job - if you are course-setter - is to entertain the group. Simple, easily explained concepts that require a modicum of walking/running are what is required. Above all, it's got to be fun.

  • It doesn't need to be perfect - although I note that most events are well done. If you have a copy of the maps DVD (with lots and lots of previous courses on it), then you can probably arm-chair set most of the course.

  • If you are out on the course:
    • And the pole does not have an obvious number - put an X in that square
    • If there is no pole there - record the number from the nearest light pole - one over, across the road...be inventive!
    • There are NO light poles or power poles in sight - you're probably lost (for guidance here, please read the fine print section labelled Unconditional Guarantee - which describes in painstaking detail how we'll cover you for most conditions - up to and including nothing - and a legalese explanation of the term unconditional guarantee - ie a guarantee that is not honoured under any conditions).
    • If you lose your card - no problem, fill another one in at the finish
    • If you experience catastrophic pen failure - use the pointy bit to poke holes in the appropriate squares
