Where:  Northern and North-Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne
When:  7:00pm on Thursdays (as indicated in the program on the Street-O home page)
Who:  Street orienteering is a popular pastime for people in all suburbs - people from 8 to 85 take part in the current series. In addition, we are joined regularly by scout/guide groups as part of a navigation exercise and by several local schools that run the Victorian high-schools street-orienteering series.  All welcome!
Cost: $4 per event for adults, $2 for juniors/students
More information: We would be pleased to provide you with assistance in getting started - people turning up to their first event are asked to arrive 20-30 minutes early. This will provide more than enough time to show you how to register for the event and explain how to take part in the event.  If you have any questions, please ring Geoff Hudson on 9888 8121

Event 9 - Fabulous Fitzroy (The Map)

Rod Lawlor - moments before heading down
to Lorne to locate two lost teenagers

Occasionally, there are things that take precedence over our sport and this proved to be one such situation. Our course-setter called on the day before the event to advise that while he had set the course, he had a lot of map corrections that needed to be made...but that he had to be on a bus to Lorne within 2 hours as part of a Search and Rescue team that would look for the two lads that tried (unsuccessfully) to get into the Falls Festival at Lorne via the back entrance (there isn;t one...).

So there it is - we're really sorry that some of you found alley-ways that had been blocked in recent times...but at least you didn't have to spend three nights out in the open like the two lads at Lorne (although if you had got lost, we would have found you a lot quicker than the 3 days that it took Rod to find the two boys).

Suffice to say that we've spent the last two days updating the map and wandering about Fitzroy to check the corrections made and other areas that looked to be suspect. In spite of this, this will always be a map where alleys should be used judiciously...we found several more brand-new brick walls and roll-a-door garages that have been built across other alley-ways.

We'll pop a copy of the updated map online tomorrow night - and we'd appreciate any feedback re things that we might have missed. Please come back then...

Fence Symbols Explained

Single whiskers - Crossable fence - this is generally a log or galvanised fence line that can be crossed by a moderately able orienteer Double-whiskers - this is an uncrossable fence - it is often high and may have pointy bits on top. Orienteers have been badly hurt crossing such fences (besides which it is anti-social to climb such fences....and it is cheating. This symbol means "DO NOT CROSS THIS FENCE" - if you are observed doing so, you will be disqualified) Unless of course, there is a marked gap or gate in the fence....yippee!

Next Week's Event

Is at Coburg Lake - this was a new addition to our maps last year and proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable run! The area is criss-crossed with creeks, the lake, and lots of grassy cut-throughs to switch from street to street. Run by the lads from Tuckonie - this is one not to be missed! Get there if you can....
