Current wisdom is that carbohydrate loading before
exercise is beneficial - just don't overdo it...

Geoff Hudson - Upper Kerrimuir

Did anyone else notice that it was hilly or was it just me. Strangely, as we get fitter, the hills seem to be less of an issue - until one gets home and looks at the kilometre rates achieved for each kilometre of the run. The pack started out at a 5:13 pace for the first 2 kilometres, but this soon dropped as we encountered a couple of short streets that climbed up 30-40m in the space of 150-200m.

Ian Davies and Ian Dodd led the pack out to the West with Ian Stirling running well ...just behind. It seems that a couple of runners failed to notice the alley-way immediately adjacent to control #22 - the big alleyway, with the posts across the entrance and the huge, very visible pavement that ran through it to the next court over. Some suggested that the control circle might have obscured the alley-way, but then....we don't print control circles on the Master Maps so it would have been very visible there if one had taken the time to have a look (Hey...I seldom look at Master Maps either... I find the uncertainty that results from running a new map, in darkness, suffering oxygen deprivation and unable to see through sweaty glasses quite exhilarating. At the very least, it gives me several standard excuses to try and explain my poor results at each night's event).

As we headed into #8, Ian Greenwood made a fatal mistake - and skipped #23. This was to cost him dearly later in the event - although he exacerbated the situation as a result of several other navigational misdemeanours. I was surprised to see people cut through the middle of the map and head across the footbridge  and over the freeway. I had thought that people would head all the way through the streets - without the necessity of crossing rougher terrain such as this.

Ian Davies topped the running scores this evening - with 100 points...although it took him over 12 Km to get them all. I suspect that one could probably have got the lot in about 10.5 Km...perhaps somebody that came close can add in the extra distance and confirm if this was so.

What does Kerrimuir Mean?

Kerrimuir, a small area in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, is named after the town of Kirriemuir, sometimes called Kirrie, in Angus Scotland. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirriemuir for more information.

Schon Hudson wins the Inaugural "Most Effective StreetO Participant" Award

As we compared GPS distances after this evening's event someone suggested that we could work out kilometre rates - ie number of points gathered per kilometre. We'll put a sheet up in future to allow people to write their distances down - and it may provide another avenue for comparison of our running and route choice capabilities. The results for our inaugural event are shown below - I can see that several people will want to update the regulations associated with this activity...as clustering high-score controls near the start location provides walkers with a huge advantage.

Feedback

Ian Greenwood - Over the past month I have been showing my support for the Western Suburbs Tuesday Series and consequently opted out of Mondays.  When attending on the Eastern Wednesday nights, I have been intrigued by all the discussion about what I allegedly said on Monday nights on the Street-O website.  I would like to thank the anonymous author of my Monday comments in my absence!  I returned tonight as I would have to leave at lunch time tomorrow to travel to Williamstown.

As for the run tonight, fortunately for me Ray made a bigger mistake than I did late in the run so he let me in for a win.  This was despite the nice new Asics he acquired last week that gave him the 2-nil advantage last week.  And tonight, I can't believe some of the skinny guys ran over 12km and got back in time.  Perhaps I should eat rice like they are rumoured to eat. Enough time wasted on this trivia, I hear Coles has a Cadbury special this week so I need to go shopping now before they sell out.

Ian Davies - I would like to decry the standard of decorum at the recent training evening.  It seems a certain well known identity who chose to honour us with his presence, rather that sharing the misfortunes of his dietary cravings via Email.  The above mentioned identity was heard, whilst in the company of others to refer to me as "The biafr-ian (sic)".  I will let it be known that in future such comments may result in a loud exchange of nouns.

The other Ian Greenwood Replies

In running, Ian Davies can't be beaten,
Which I think comes from not eating.
It's not very fair,
That he's lighter than air,
Some might say that he's cheating.

Ian Davies Replies...

With only 10.2 kilometres in distance
You're going to meet with resistance
Not wanting to bore
...but I did 12.4
So your diet needs much more persistence
