Ian Stirling - Camelot Rise

Photo at left - Ian runs into the finish on Day 1 of Easter. As he approached the penultimate control, he sank into the mud and lost one of his shoes. Recognising that time was of the essence, he reached in and retrieved his shoe and ran the final control with one shoe on and one shoe off . Many suggested that he found out the true meaning of "bog running..", although I was under the impression that this was something that old-people did (An aged friend once counselled me to "never stand between an old-person and the toilet).

Always looking for coincidences, I wonder if Ian noticed that the map that day was Diddleum - 45 Km East of Launceston. So what you say? Surely, you remember the old nursery rhyme...

Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John
Went to bed with his stockings on;
One shoe off, and one shoe on,
Diddle, diddle, dumpling, my son John.

Except it was Ian and apart from his regular post-event nap, I don't think he went to bed in that condition...

Oh yes....Ian also organised the street-O training event this evening - a terrific event, on a good map and in excellent conditions. As an added bonus, he gave us an extra 30-40 seconds or so by surprising us moments before 7:00pm with "off you go then...". I have little doubt that this was a cunning ploy by Ian to catch all those still fumbling with plastic bags, closing Land-Cruiser doors and attempting to retrieve canine friends unawares - and, it worked. Bruce thundered out - well ahead of the pack - although it was suggested that he's been riding his bike at recent events and maybe that was how he got so far ahead of us so quickly.

The pack headed around to #13, #4 and began to break up at the #1 / #14 decision point. Those that did #14, headed  around to #25 and then #8 - and split again at that point. While some went to #21, others tucked back into the centre to get #1, #18 and then #16- - -#21.

While you were all thundering off....3-4 more people arrived late. Thanks to Schon for staying back and helping them out by unlocking the car, getting score-cards etc out and relocking the car and securing the key.

As we jogged around, Mark Besley and I wondered about our practise of putting the dot on one side of the road...or biasing the circle to show the location of the control. We wondered if it might be easier for training events if we put a circle on the reference point (e.g. the intersection) and then let the runners decide what the closest light pole was. The difference would be unlikely to amount to much more than 8-10 metres...ie a maximum of 200m on one of our courses, but probably much less. Our aim here is to provide fun events - with a minimum of organisational effort/stress. If you're under pressure in the future - think about giving this a go.

It broke my heart to subtract the 3 points for being late - but in reality, we did get the extra time and I don't think penalties had significant impact on the positions recorded. Thanks to everybody for turning up - I was stopped twice this evening by passers-by who wanted to know why we were running around and what all the lights were - as I approached the finish, it certainly looked great to see people/headlamps weaving in and out into the side streets on the way home. Well done Ian!

Feedback

Ian Greenwood - on my personal trainer's advice, I skipped this evening. He said that I should save myself for Wednesday - that someone that likes chocolate mousse as much as I do would be ill-advised to stress my cardio system too frequently between meals. See you all Wednesday - unless a particularly good dessert comes along - failing that perhaps next Saturday...
