It seemed that everybody turned up for the 10:00 am start - perhaps they realised that bad weather was on the way and wanted to finish before it arrived. Organiser Debbie provided a quick briefing to all present, while Ian (in the position of Court Jester) provided an entertaining demonstration of the map exchange process for runners. I was later to note how few people actually followed his over-emphasised gyrations as he approached the map exchange - and wondered if this might provide grounds for protest.
Forgive me if I provide a description of the event from a runner's perspective - as this was the course that I did (and as tail-end Charlie most of the way around, I had a pretty good view of which controls those in front of me were doing). Lots headed around the creek to start with - superb running along the valley - it would have been a shame to waste it...so most of us did it first. While most used the bridges, some skipped across rocks to cut corners and peg back a little of the distance between them and those ahead. By the 4th or 5th control the field was now quite divided and I followed Louise and Mark - well done to Louise for spotting the map correction on the way to #4 - and we thought we better check that the extra laneway did go all the way through to the next court so we could provide accurate information to the mapper on our return to the finish. As we approached the controls on the Western side of the map, our paths converged with other runners from the same course.
Runners grabbed their second map and headed off to Koomba Park. I hadn't picked up that this was about a kilometre away and was quite confused until an oncoming walker took pity on me and provided an explanation. As we headed under Boronia Road, we stepped onto the area covered by the 1:5000 colour map. Even thought the area is quite limited, this proved to be a lot of fun - as we discovered that the area was quite marshy and those that tried to cut corners disappeared into deep mud. The slow going in some areas cost several runners a lot of time!
All in all a great event - a terrific demonstration of how a low-key event without excessive organisation can entertain a heap of runners for 60-90 minutes. Congratulations to the DROC folks for their efforts
Note: a 3 minute penalty was incurred for each incorrect answer on Map 2
