Report

Somewhat apprehensive about how the event would be received by the gathered crowd, Barry kindly purchased yummies from the nearby Supermarket while we were out.

The buzz in the finish area told the story - as you ran into the finish everybody was talking about their successes and occasional disaster, comparing courses and congratulating Barry on an excellent new concept in street-orienteering fun running. Judging by the double-sided map - with two different views of the course this evening - Barry had gone to a lot of trouble to get things "just right". All controls were where they were supposed to be, all had working lights and all had numbers.

"Enjoy your run, take care crossing roads" echoed from the timing system as we turned our maps over. Looking at the traditional grey-scale map  first caused a little consternation and some confusion for 10-15 seconds, but most people picked a likely control and headed for it pretty quickly. Barry had mentioned that he had drawn an alternate map on the other side of the page and on turning it over, I was pleasantly surprised to see a visual representation of the pairs required for the evening. Much easier!!

Some didn't listen to the briefing, didn't notice that there was something on the other side of the page and ignored the comments of passing runners. As Louise (LH74) ran with Ian (IBG72) she noted casually that "....the line drawing on the other side of the page is incredibly helpful, don't you think?" Ian - remembering Lou's double-sided map from Hell at Croydon last year - assumed she was talking about that...and never thought to unfold his map and use the easier representation on the other side.

Lisa had borrowed a set of colouring pencils from her kids - and used these to devastating effect by colouring in the other member of a pair as she arrived at each control. This seemed to work pretty well as she ended up with 8 matched pairs + 13 and no left-over controls. It occurred to me that if Barry had not provided  the paired representation that we could make our own pretty quickly with a felt pen (or Lisa could have done it - in brilliant Technicolour - with her coloured pencils).

What did we learn?
  • Getting #5 was not a good move for slower runners
  • Scoring this type of event was not too arduous - more complex pairings could have been a lot harder.
  • Sprint to the finish - because of the nature of the scoring there were a lot of people on similar scores. Timing is critical in this event!
  • This is an excellent format - one well worth repeating!

Schon discovers to her horror that unmatched controls score zero - in a failed coup-d'etat attempt,
she draws other orienteers attention to this clause in the rules.

Barry is unmoved - and offers to reimburse the event entry fee to anyone unwilling to run by his rules.

For a brief moment there, I thought Mike had forgotten to put his running shorts on this week
...but then discovered that they were skin coloured shorts
