Report

Neale and Johanna Banks
(with Johanna in front - as always...)
Greg Mummery - spotted us running at Mitcham a couple of weeks ago and found us on the web. Did very well on his first attempt at street-orienteering. Barry tries to work out how Paul
got two more controls than he did.
A working dog in retirement - not quite....
Lou walked with Sue, but led the way for the entire course - and even swiped her tag before Sue managed to get to the finish station. A disgruntled Sue protested - see full story below.

We were very lucky with the weather! The heavens had opened around 5 pm and we had local showers for the next 2 hours or so, but fortunately it was very light by 7pm and stopped completely shortly after. We do note that dark wet conditions make footpaths even more slippery and would encourage people to take good lighting with fresh batteries and be careful running along uneven surfaces such as footpaths.

Judy had set a 26 control course this evening - the 26th control being her friend around the corner at #28. My apologies to people that wanted to claim this - and I haven't provided 7 points as suggested (I didn't even give myself the extra points as I wondered how I could record #28 on the card - only to realise that the control thereabouts was actually #1. I should have dropped this and gone directly from 8 to 15). As an added bonus for our fitter runners, Judy had prepared two maps - a long course and a short course. The long course used the extra area above Highbury Road - so fitter participants could stretch out and get more distance (but in most cases, less controls). I think this is an interesting format and may use this in future - but I'll provide an extra 5 controls and 30 control cards to long-course participants - that way they get the same close-in controls as us with the opportunity to pick up a few 2-3 point controls in an adjacent area. The format would be like a cross between Bernie's event last week and Judy's event this week.

News from Bernie

On the subject of Bernie - he reports that Ann underwent bypass surgery over the weekend and everything seems to have gone well. While she is in ICU for a couple of days, she's sleeping well and is already looking better. We'll keep you posted as more news comes to hand.

Power Walker Disqualified

Lou (aka Louise) Waller who took part in her first street-orienteering event today with Sue (aka Susan) Waller was disqualified as a result of poor power-walking form. Lou is staying with Sue and Paul at the moment and went with Sue this evening. All went well out on the course, although Sue noted that she was always out in front and surged ahead to get to each of the light poles before Sue. When pressed for more details, Sue noted that she had walked behind Lou for the whole course and was aware that she often had two feet off the ground at the same time - and that she wondered if she could lodge a protest about this. It was noted that other PW entrants are not permitted to have more than one foot off the ground at a time - and that this concept should be applied across the board. After several moments of serious consideration and much laughter - Lou was disqualified (if I were you Sue, I'd make sure she sleeps outside tonight - if she's miffed by this decision, her vengeance could be swift...).

After the run, we all retired to Judy's place for tea/coffee, pizza and various other delicacies provided by our host. Thanks Judy for an enjoyable evening.

Feedback

Eric Davidson - I liked having the choice of long or short course, although it is a lot more work for the course setter. Having a lolly stop was great. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who help make Monday nights happen. It is my main orienteering activity at the moment.

If you haven't already done so, we need everybody to log into the training database and pick a date, a map and a course. If you haven't used it yet, why not check it out now at http://street.orienteering.com.au/training/login.asp

Note that we've added a contact list table - so we can capture contact details for participants - please note that this information is only visible to people that know how to login to this system.

Results

The red lines below are folks that (I think) did the long course - these people would have done dramatically better if they had run the same course as the rest of us, but chose to do a longer course for increased enjoyment.
