Report

Highlights

  • A very interesting format - and one in which the fastest runners did not necessarily do the best. I focussed on the high-pointers only, thinking (stupidly) that I would just get them and then return to the finish...early if necessary. How wrong I was....as I followed Fitz (with Marta on a tight leash) across to #14, I realised that I was going to be under time pressure, but at that stage I had little choice but to continue my planned course....leaving out 12 and 15 on the way home (wasn't it frustrating to pass the other end of the street that 12 was in and not be able to get to the control - even though you knew what the street sign would say!!!). It struck me that this was a format that would be very good in an area that had lots of courts...only one street sign per court and it would discourage folks from putting controls at the end of dead-end courts.

  • What a great night for a run - let's hope we get more of these before Melbourne slips into another ice-age (in the next few weeks or so)

  • Bryan didn't get the lot

  • Tea/coffee afterwards was much appreciated - thanks Bernie!

Feedback

From Bruce - Actually I guess you could argue that I should be 3rd rather than 1st since I took longer to get the 90, but then I deliberately visited more other controls on the way, so it all depends on your point of view and whether anyone cares. My route choice had some really dodgy sections, but overall I guess these temporary lapses didn't impact too much. Very nearly did a face-plant tripping over a fallen branch cutting through Wattle Park on the way back from 16 but managed to convert it into a lurch/stagger.  At one point I miss counted and thought Bernie had done something really sneaky like leaving out a 5-pointer in the top half (now that would really throw you!).

From Geoff -  http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1866227 for my track. Strangely, the GPS says 9.2 Km, but gmaps says 9.8 Km. It’s always been low and always by about 10%. I didn’t go for #7 at the beginning – but picked up #6 on the way past and then 9, 6 and 8 on the lower half. Crossed paths with Mark/Lou as I was running from lower 11 to lower 12 (and I noted that Lou was about 50-70m ahead at that stage).

From Louise - http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=1868766 - 9.8 km (same as yours - interesting). I look forward to seeing the results. I did 25 controls in total - last time we did this course, I didn't collect enough little ones to make the 20, so this time I got whatever little ones were on my way. In hindsight, there were a few I shouldn't have bothered with, but this would only have added an extra point or two. ......and later...Very interesting to see who the tactical players are, doing better than their running speed would imply; and those who aren't, coming further down the list than they're used to. A format that needs more practice runs perhaps...
