"Guess at your peril...." said Peter at the start...."but if you get it wrong, there's no bonus".  - - - - - and no doubt several of the more cunning folks applied logic here and recognised that unless 13 was an X then there would be no bonuses for anyone anyway. Hands up everybody that left 13 out....

Welcome to newcomers David and Mark. David is a football umpire and saw mention of our training runs on the website - he decided to come along and see what it was all about....and enjoyed it so much that we'll see him again at future events. Mark is a friend of Seb's and came along this evening to see what it was all about - from the scores below it looks like he got his money's worth. Well done guys an excellent effort from both of you on your first time out!

Thanks to Peter and Ilze for their hospitality this evening - everything is so much easier when we start from someone's house - and the refreshments afterwards were terrific too!

Comments from Participants

My tale of woe...Schon's torch failed and chivalry (and any possibility of being fed later that evening) demanded that I give her mine. Did anybody notice that the area was either not well lit and/or heavily treed - thereby limiting the range of any light that was provided? This deficiency of one in the torch department was exacerbated even further by the fact that several of the street signs that were used were nowhere near light poles....my normally excellent distance vision which allowed me to see signs 50-60m away was no use this evening...on one occasion I could only just make out the lettering when I was standing directly underneath the sign! (and forgive me for mentioning that the control locations were marked with a really fine pen that was quite hard to see in the dark - I ran 9 - 14 and headed around to 29 ...only to realise as I reached it that there wasn't a square 29 on the score-card and then looked more closely to see that it was actually #24).

At the risk of offending our gentler readers, I note a new street-orienteering failure mode - or certainly one that I've never heard mention of before. Within 30 seconds of the start, as I ran around the corner into Central Avenue, I was aware that the elastic that held up my running shorts did not seem to be working as well as normal. If my clumsy attempts to pull my shorts back up every now and then traumatised anyone that was unfortunate enough to observe them I am deeply apologetic and grateful for your discretion in not mentioning it. (I am aware that many amongst you were kind enough not to mention Ian Greenwood's recent fumbling attempts to retrieve a GPS data logger that kept falling down the front of his shorts - and in fact, I'm led to believe that a pedometer was lost in similar circumstances at a recent mid-week event - so if you are running by and see one of these things lying on the ground....get tongs).

Ian Greenwood's - So what a great idea!  The only problem I had was keeping track of what was an 'X' or an 'O'.  I would run by a sign and say in my mind, there is no 'O' in that and because 'no' sounds like 'O' a couple of time I wrote down 'O'!!  I think I corrected them all.  We did 10.6km with lots of stops and checking signs.  Got them all but only just.  We left out '1' at the start because if we were not going to get them all, it was the obvious one to finish with.  The sprint up the hill to get it last was hard work!  It was handy having a helper with me (Cam) - he could read a street sign in the dark from 20 metres!!  Well done to Ilze and Pete on a very novel, new type of event.

Space for your tale of woe here....
