The Map - showing the tinsel sites and bonus locations
An interesting idea Katherine - and one that I enjoyed immensely....although I must confess to having an advantage that I knew where two of the tinsel sites were likely to be (as I know where Chateau Dent is in David Street). This gave me a distinct advantage over the unsuspecting Ian Stirling who was running with me and actually did 15/16 in the right order - unless one knew that dropping 12 was not likely to be a good idea. I compensated for this advantage by failing to spot the tinsel at number 11 (and yes, I did wonder why the unit number was so carefully noted...but from 3-4 metres away all the post-boxes looked the same and I was aware that David Payne was coming up rapidly from behind.
This was an event where running clockwise made a distinct difference to running anti-clockwise. As we ran South to 5 and then 2, I commented to David Beard that our strategy was flawed - that all the high-point controls were in the upper half of the map. It also occurred to me that Katherine's friends were probably closer to her place and that the probability was that most of the bonus controls would be close to #12. Approaching #2, we had no choice but to continue - although I chose to drop #7 to leave more time for the Northern controls. As it turned out this proved to be a good approach - as, coming from this direction, the bonus controls were all on one's line of travel....no backtracking was required. If you came from the other direction you would not be so lucky!
Welcome to Lynette Giddings and Prima (as in Donna) the dog. Lynette was kind enough to host our Mont Albert event a few weeks ago and we're pleased that she enjoyed our hospitality in return last night. We look forward to seeing Lynette and Prima at events in the future.
Ian Greenwood. The map didn't seem to make a lot of sense to me. Unable to fit the map to the terrain, I decided to run in a Ray Howe search pattern (a technique used by fast runners in the belief that if they cover enough ground they'll eventually bump into another runner who will tell them where the control site is. Used to devastating effect by Ray at last Wednesday's Mont Albert event - unfortunately, devastating to his score not ours). p.s. from email this morning....Hello everybody.....a quick hi from NZ. Yes, it is very pretty! Snow at Remarkables today was very good and the coffee in Queenstown is excellent!
A word about how the scoring software works - each week, after meticulously checking the punch marks in each square on your card, we scan the card row by row and write the number of valid punches at the end of each row. This gives us a 4 digit number for a 20 control course or a five digit number for one of our 25 control training courses. Thus, all I key into the software for someone like Bryan is 55555 - we let the computer work out the maths. This approach is pretty accurate - but more importantly, it's fast.
This works well where the control card is made up of rows of equal points value - but does not work so well if a custom card is used and the numbers are wrapped around only 4 columns. As it turned out, the card was excellent for the event - but a little more difficult to score. No harm done, Schon didn't look very busy at the time so I plied her with tea and chocolate biscuits and conned her into doing the scoring for me. The resulting scores are below....
