100 Point Score Puzzle by Keith

Report

My apologies for not sending out the warning email a little sooner - it was clear when Keith dropped around to put controls on the map and print his maps for Monday night that there was a possibility of confusion. In future, I'll put a little skull and crossbones type warning up on the street-O homepage and most of you can review it from work.

It seemed to me that the concept had merit - but was perhaps a little too challenging when sprung on one at short notice. For better or worse, we experiment with novelty events on Monday Nights every now and then and some go better than others. If we want to reap the benefit of the good events, we have to be prepared to accept that don't work as well and offer constructive advice about how the concept could be improved...so here's my suggestions:

Comments

Ian Greenwood - What an intriguing event!  I set-off thinking that the hidden controls were 100m-200m metres from the ones I was visiting.  I looked at the map and thought get 2-17 early and work my way around clockwise.  After #2 I realised that it would be worth having a serious look at where all controls were so I sat on the footpath and drew them in!  I ran 2-4-17-1-20-16-9-19-21-6-7-22-12-23-24-18-5-11 and got back under a minute late.  I only did 8.4km with some serious hills early on and a lot of stuffing around time!   Well done Keith on a novel concept.  I hope the people in the houses I was shining my torch onto their porches to see the house number didn't mind too much!!

From Paul Vella - Personally I enjoyed the new concept and it is something worth pursuing with. With practice one would get better. I too found that I was tending to walk more than usual as I was trying to calculate where I should be aiming at one controll at a time rather than looking 3 or 4 ahead. The other trick I found was looking for the pattern of where Keith has placed his missing contolls ie starting with 3, controll 24 (hidden) was 250M SE of 3, 15 ( hidden) was 120M SE of 24 (which was hidden) & 5 (hidden) was 150M SE of 15(hidden). All three are in a straight line SE of 3. My biggest mistake was not looking close enough at the map.

From Ray - Alright here I go again. 11,17,1,21,6,7, at this stage I realised I didn't understand the game so I had a rethink and work out what had to be done, 22,12, looked for 10 couldn't find it, had a rethink realized it could be in another street,23,13, ran thru school got disorientated asked David P where was I,25,3,18, got the hang of what I had to do,24,15,8, got lost in the park and came out the other end. Ran home thinking I was late but the highlight to my night was that I wasn't late due to the generous timing system. So that's the gory details of my Monday night. Despite all this I think the idea has merit.
