Event Feedback

Well done Chris - the Hagerby proved to be so exciting and such hard work that we're prepared to forgive you for putting the start triangle on one map in the wrong place. In reality, only those that started with Loop 3 should have been bothered by this as the others had seen the correct location on maps 1 and/or 2. Numbers were a little down as a few of the regulars had decided to attend the VOA AGM - and listen to what promised to be an excellent lecture on managing the press from a guest speaker.

As it turned out, Geoff, Ian Greenwood, Peter Kempster, Paul, Jarrah and others headed out to control #4 directly from the start. Geoff was first to turn into the next street over and immediately realised that something was wrong - he had punched this control in Bernie's event last year and the court had been much shorter back then! Confused....street lights on the wrong side...run a little further, maybe it will all make sense...then Ian Greenwood yelled out that the Start Triangle was marked in the wrong street and everything fell into place. For most of us - bad luck to Peter K. who - on the return trip past this street - decided to run up the street again, just in case we had moved the finish over one street while he was out running around the course.

Peter Yeates was running pretty well until he decided to be a little smart and left out a control on an earlier loop with the intention of picking it up - via excellent map memory skills - on a later loop (....feverishly consults the Sayer's Book of Hagerby Rules and can't find anything that says this is not allowed...so well done for thinking of that...wish I had...). Unfortunately for Peter as he switched maps and headed out onto Loop #2, he dropped his score card - and then decided to run back and get it. Having done so, he again arrived at the control only to realise that he had left his pencil on the table as he switched maps - back he went to get it. Peter has asked for special dispensation here - as the embarrassment of being beaten by power-walking wife Ilze will be difficult to cope with. Does anyone really think we should give him 6 points for visiting control #1 three times?

Was there a best way to do the three loops? Some noted that leg one provided 2 x 5's and 2 x 4's - but the 5's were a long way out. Leg  #3 was probably the one with least climb - or at least climb that was spread out over a longer distance, so we didn't notice it as much. One thing that a lot of people noticed was that we seemed to work a lot harder than normal - possibly due to the steep terrain combined with the short legs that encouraged one to run faster.

Finally, thanks to Margaret (Chris' mother) who was kind enough to prepare drinks for us while we were all out enjoying ourselves. Margaret was a keen orienteer in years gone by and now keeps fit playing basketball 3-4 times per week.
