7:00pm on Mondays (as indicated in the program on the Street-O
home page)
Who:
Regular street orienteers that are
looking for something different - training nights on Mondays. We'll use
this as an opportunity to get another run and try out a few new ideas. If
you'd like a fun evening in good company, please let us know by email (on
the link below).

More information:
Please arrive after 6:30 pm for a 7:00 pm start. In some
cases, the host for the evening may supply a cup of tea - but nothing is
guaranteed - just a run and a bit of fun. We've got the first 3-4 events
queued up. If you'd like to run a night, please let me know. If interested
in more details, read about the previous events below.
Last minute announcements may not be heard by all present. Special
instructions should be printed on the map wherever possible.....and people's
attention drawn to these during the briefing. Then there's no excuse.
That we should set the table/start material up in the back of a car (happy
to volunteer mine). Then all we have to do is close the car and start our run
- the course-setter shouldn't have to stay back and pack up.
That having NO control plates makes no real difference to the concept and
enjoyment of street-orienteering - and it's certainly a lot less work
That there are lots of things that could be "controls" - Judy's addition
of street signs was most innovative - and they're certainly easier to read
than the serial numbers on light poles!
That all it takes to create a novelty event and amuse all participants is
to put lollies in a letter-box and make this a control site.
That more controls is better than less
That biros don't work well in cold/wet weather conditions - and pencils
don't work at all on gloss cards. Chinagraph pencils seem to work in both
cases.
That we have to be careful when writing numbers down - be careful near
controls - if you start running while writing a number on your card, you could
trip on the gutter or run into a nearby car (I've done both...)
That teams events - or event formats that encourage people to work together
- are fun. Encouraging runners to work together with walkers or people in
other categories is healthy for street-O.
and finally, when attending Bruce's next event, we all need to pay much
more attention to the course-setter's instructions and think about them
for 1-2 minutes before heading off.
Please send any feedback on the above list or ideas for interesting/amusing event formats to me and
I'll publish your suggestions here. Here's a few event format suggestions
received so far:
From Bernie Shuttleworth - comes Double-O. With virtual controls,
we could have more than 20. I suggest 40. People carry two cards, labelled A
and B. Controls are marked 1A to 20 A and 1 B to 20B, to be recorded on the
respective cards. Here's the rub: maximum of 20 controls get
scored, so faster
runners would try for 11A to 20A and 11B to 20B. This allows us to run an
event with the same cards as now.
From Alan Miller - Bing-O; a score card using the current score card. Only difference is that
you get extra points for a full row or a complete column. Suggested points are
5 points for a complete row and 4 points for a complete column. The only issue
here is that people that have the ability to get everything would not need to
think about this - just get the lot and you get all bonuses too. An ideas to
handle this?
From Geoff - O-pair; you only score points if you get both members of a pair. This
offers a number of course setting opportunities - controls could be randomised
as normal or set in two distinct groups some distance apart. You would need to
be careful that you weren't too greedy when harvesting the first group - you
have to leave time for the second.
