Our host & course setter for the evening David Prentice |
"I'm not leaving until you explain again what I've got to do - and this time slowly..." | Still not sure of the instructions, Tina eats her score card to slow down proceedings.... |
David Prentice set a gruelling course on this Monday evening. It was a 25 control score course (a Cavill Ton), a format that has proved very popular ever since Wally ran it first in Mount Waverley. To make things more interesting David had arranged to shift one light pole to the next street over and a couple of controls had slightly confusing numbers. Add to this the hilly terrain, a freeway down the middle of the map and several 3, 4, 5 point controls that seemed just out of reach on the edge of the map and it was clear that this was a tough one. The only easy part was that the run into the finish would be downhill - David and Khayen's driveway was probably the steepest part of the whole course!
There were 5 controls - a 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 point cluster - on the other side of the freeway. Only problem was that you had to decide to go over there early as you needed to guarantee that you would be able to finish the loop and get back before time was up. A group of runners led by Bruce and Vic picked up the 4 nearby controls just West of the start and then headed over to do the Southern controls. In the meantime, others chose the Northern set of controls - although this instantly restricted them to 80 points if they got the lot - and there were an additional 15 of those that were way, way out. This reduced the score further to about 65 + one...maybe two of the remote controls. It was an interesting course indeed - and the scores reflect this!
The Power Walking scores were VERY interesting. Hyper-walker, Tina Smith still not entirely sure of the instructions was almost pipped at the post by the more-experienced Judy Hopkins. With only 1 point difference on a 60-61 point score, this was a close run thing indeed......ooops....did I say run.....sorry Len......oops, Judy. (All joking aside, anyone that has been overtaken by Tina is very aware of how clean the walking style is - and how fast. Great result Judy!)
Finally, congratulations to:
Next week's event will be hosted by Louise. Start location is Burnt Bridge Shopping Centre - Melway Map 50 D3. The activity will be scrabble-O - 25 controls. It works this way....we dash around the course as normal, collecting the first letter from street signs (a la Hopkins Notation). If there's 2-3 signs, then note them all down. Each control is scored this way - first, the points per letter are as per Scrabble - little used letters are worth more than commonly used letters. Second, if there's more than one sign, then you get double or triple the points for that control - bonus!
Speaking about bonuses (although, I suspect that's not the plural of bonus....but a modernised version of same. Bonus is latin for good...or possibly a good man derived from the neuter gender bonum meaning a good thing. Strictly, the plural should be bona (as in maximum, maxima...)). Now where were we....oh yes....the bonus. As you collect your letters, write neatly (this may qualify you for the Mark W. Besley - neatest control card award at the end of the series). As you run down the finish chute, you have to provide a word that has been formed from the letters that you've collected - although, not necessarily all of them. Prizes will be awarded for
Judges decision (that's me and Lou) - will be final. (Lou - I was thinking of half a bar of chocolate for the longest word....can I have the unused portion of your Maxi prize back?)
p.s. Who brought the cake? Thanks - it was yummy...
