Welcome to Ben Cotter and Mike Hubbert - new participants in the Monday night series. Ben got all controls plus the maximum 10 point bonus and finished just ahead of Fitzel the Wonder Dog - placing him in contention for the top spot in future events. Lauris had arranged a 25 control score course for the evening with a total distance a little over 10 Km. Much to the disappointment of all there were no lollies at this event - but in an endeavour to increase the distance, Lauris introduced a new form of "bonus controls" where you had to collect the number of every light pole in a marked area (although there were no lollies on these light poles...).
As competitive as ever, Judy was heard to mutter "Bloody Kirstie" as they left the finish chute - apparently, the dispute over who would get the last remaining lolly from last week has still not been settled and it boiled over again this week as a result of a misunderstanding on route choice. We'll monitor the ongoing tension in the Hopkins Harriers from now on. There was evidence of corruption during the event - As I ran back down the street that #25 was in I approached said Harriers and was offered a bribe of lollies in exchange for the number on the pole. I must admit to considering this offer briefly - but then reflected on the likely condition of wrapped lollies that had just spent a week inside someone's running shorts - and declined.
The only difficulty on the event was a recalcitrant light pole in the middle of a park that didn't bother to turn on that night - I was quite confused until I got to within 10-20m of the pole and then it was just visible in the torchlight. Apart from that, the route choices selected were many and varied - a sure sign of excellent course-setting. Top marks to our course-setter - Lauris Stirling - who went above and beyond the call of duty to visit the incorrectly advertised start location in case Bernie was waiting there (sorry Bernie ;-)). A lesson here - please visit the streetO home page on Sunday or Monday for latest details - or call me by phone on 0407 998 240 if any doubt at all. I'll endeavour to send out a confirmation email on Sunday evenings in future - to those for whom I have an email address.
Some of you may notice that we've omitted to include "late points" in the table below - just another measure of the Monday Night friendly atmosphere - it just seems so unfair to penalise someone that's just run 10+ Km in 60 minutes for being a few seconds late. Mind you, we might have to introduce a "running down the wrong street" penalty if Mark proves unable to correct this aberrant (defined by the Penguin English Dictionary as adj. wandering from the right path) behaviour.
Next week's event is at Bryan's place in Ferntree Gully - and is rumoured to have an Oxfam theme as Bryan will be taking part in the Sydney Trailwalker on the previous Friday/Saturday. Hmmm...Oxfam Themes - - - -100Km -hope not, masseurs at every checkpoint - would be nice, free food & drink - in your dreams, climb the Dandenongs 3 times....now there's an idea!
See you all next week!
