Report

Even though the British legislated against cruel and unusual punishment in 1689, it still hasn't made it into Ian Dodd's Charter of Street-O Rights (or was it rules...). While the British may not think it qualifies, I thought that having to carry a wrapped lolly for the last three controls on Monday Night was pretty cruel. Ian Dodd, usually a much faster runner than myself, was entranced by the lolly-filled post-box. As I ran up to number 28, I could hear him counting his way through the lollies and trying to reconcile this to the number of runners that had already passed through and those that were still to come. As I helped him away from the post-box, he kept reaching backwards....concerned that he may have left too many behind....and muttering something about taking 10% extra so he could pass it over the organiser at the end of the evening.....what exactly is a pass-through expense anyway?

The rain earlier in the evening had probably reduced numbers a little - but, as luck would have it, we didn't see any rain for the duration of the event. The conditions were beautifully crisp and cool - with a freshness that only comes after a good rain. Perfect running weather. The activity was a score course - with a slight twist being the bonus control + bonus lolly from the house of a good friend of Judy's. Apparently, Judy had considered filling the letter-box with scones, but hygiene was a key concern and wrapped lollies were more manageable.

The Sheahan's were new attendees for Monday nights - we seem to be getting a couple of new folks each week - and those that come along rapidly realise that we can have just as much fun on a simple social event as we can on the more organised street-events. Louise ran for the first time in recent weeks - apparently, the warm-up on Sunday and half-bar of chocolate that she won at the Maxi (see expose story on the Maxi web site) gave her the kick she needed to try for a run on Monday. Hope you weren't too sore later Lou. The only other incident for the evening was that Fitz tripped Marta and she got a grazed knee - something about a route choice disagreement - Fitz can be a testy little cuss when he doesn't get his own way.

Finally, thanks to Bernie Shuttleworth who inadvertently copied the house number incorrectly and ended up doing a house-to-house search for the start location - eventually finding a resident that was kind enough to look Hopkins up in the White Pages. He turned up at the start location about 5 minutes late with 4 census forms that he had been given by nearby residents - and eventually found the maps and instructions for the event and headed off. Bernie has kindly offered to run an event for us from his place - although the address he's provided as a start location doesn't seem to match the one that I have on the NE membership list. His email said something about "getting his own back..."

See you all next Week - in the Southern carpark at Mitcham Railway Station - for Lauris' event. Newcomers are welcome, but please let us know that you're coming so we don't run out of maps.
