A 9.0 - 9.5 Km event for A course - this is of course on the understanding that we would all run the shortest course possible.....few did. Marta handed out the maps about 10-15 minutes before the event, but it didn't seem to make a difference. As we headed off, I had no real idea of my overall track - I thought I'd work it out as I did the first few controls. Most A runners headed out via the nearby 18 and then to 9 about 500-600m north. From there I followed Mark to 13, 20, 15, 3 and then 17 - where we split up as he headed directly to 4 as I went to 1. (This may all make sense when I get a copy of the map to publish :-)
At control 11 I had to explain what was going on to a resident - to be honest, I really wasn't sure if he wanted to join in or was concerned that people were running up the court to look at the street light that was on an area that he might have reasonably considered "his front lawn" (although he had no front fence to delineate the edge of the property - so it would have been really hard to tell what was what). He seemed satisfied with the explanation, so I bid him goodnight and headed back towards the finish. Back behind Mark again - and sprinted from 6 to 12 to try to catch up only to have Ray tuck in about 50m behind us - as we left 12. At the entrance to the court Mark turned away from the finish to get another control, #5 just South of the start - so Ray and I sprinted (well it was the closest I ever come to a sprint anyway...) up the hill to the finish. Total distance according to the GPS was 10.3 Km - or 11.9 Km according to TRAX, a program that allows you to draw your course on the Melways. Although I'm not sure why, the GPS always seems to be about 10% lower than the same course measured via the Melways.
Terrific course! Thanks to Fitzel, Marta and David for setting it for us.
