A small number of brave souls ventured out into the frosty night to take part in our inaugural training night in Box Hill South. Starting at Geoff Hudson's house, the activity was a score course - but using light poles as controls instead of the more normal control plates. It seems that every light pole has a vertical yellow tape with a 5 digit number on it - and participants had to record the last digit of this on their score card at each control they visited. This proved not to be too difficult - costing only 2-3 seconds at each control - except one or two optically challenged runners noted that the numbers were a little hard to read from 1-2 metres away.
The event was a basic score event - total distance about 9.5 - 10.0 Km depending on route. Everybody that took part seemed to enjoy the evening - it was a perfect night for running and it was good to cross paths with others that took different courses. Scores are shown below - Bryan Ackerly has the honour of wearing the yellow jersey next week. Many of the slower runners left out controls early on - and then discovered to their horror that the extra 10 minutes provided another 1-2 Km that they wouldn't get in a standard event - as they turned towards the finish, they had to run back past controls they had already done to get 6 and 15 that were at the south of the course.
Special thanks to Alan and Pat who dropped in to provide encouragement - good luck in the operation later this week Alan.
